We had the immense pleasure of doing a lifestyle photoshoot at Catherine Freshley's Art Studio in April! Catherine graciously opened up her studio for us to bring in our mom and daughter models, Debbi and Isabel, for a fun shoot in amongst her art work. Her bright and swoon-worthy paintings totally stole the show as you can see from the pictures! Be sure to check out her pieces here (www.catherinefreshleyart.com). We promise you won't be disappointed!

A mood board mash up! During the photoshoot, Erica snapped a quick picture of Catherine's mood board hanging in her studio and contrasted it to her own in the entertainmentbartenders studio. See any differences? Similarities?

Catherine's Painting Sketches

Often inspired by color combinations in the real world, Catherine sketches her ideas in miniature before diving into a full sized canvas.  Here's an example of some of her mini paintings in her sketchbook. Her work with color is both playful and sophisticated.

Errands Denim Dress and Updraft Linen Dress

entertainmentbartenders clients, Isabel Saltzman and Debbi Saltzman fearlessly jumped into their first modelling gig, showing several looks from our latest collection, including the Chambray Errands Dress, the Updraft Dress in Essaouira Blue, and Carolyn Silk Dress in Drip.  It was lovely to see their connection and how they supported each other as they explored this new experience.

Our very own, Paul Rudolph, looking dapper per usual! He unintentionally wore the perfect sweater (or knowing Paul INTENTIONALLY wore the perfect sweater;) to accentuate Catherine's paintings and we're all happy about that.

We're ready to kiss winter goodbye and say hello to spring with a pop of blue! Look to stand out on your trip to Palm Springs or Hawaii this spring with our Pleated Halter Jumpsuit in our Casablanca print. Grab this fun and bold jumpsuit while you can - we only made a total of 11 (talk about limited edition!!) so it won't be around for long!

Ohh, wait, what! There's another one?? There sure is! Erica gleaned inspiration for the Pleated Halter Jumpsuit in Essaouira blue from her travels to Morocco several years ago. While there, she visited the coastal town of Essaouira which is where the jumpsuit's bright blue received its name. From the ocean hues to the town's architecture, that blue sure popped!

For those inclined for a more subtle print, this blue jumpsuit will have you turning heads! Spice it up with heels or keep it casual with your sneakers - she's quite the versatile piece!

Speaking of inspiration, Erica recently took a trip to Santa Fe, New Mexico, for a quick getaway trip with her family to do some skiing, spa relaxation, and art viewing. We made a quick video detailing their trip! Click here to watch.

We are teaming up with the American Cancer Society (ACS) in the fight to end breast cancer! As apart of their "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer" movement, the ACS is launching their annual Portraits of Hope campaign with the purpose of inspiring hope in the breast cancer community by featuring stories of local warriors. Are you a cancer survivor or cancer warrior, or know someone who is? Either let them know or apply yourself to be apart of the Portraits of Hope campaign! If selected, some highlights include a professional photoshoot and styling services (hi entertainmentbartenders!), a variety of media opportunities, being a voice in the community, and receiving the VIP experience at the Marking Strides Against Breast Cancer event on October 20th. Click here for more information!

Jenelle Isaacson of Living Room Realty Erica Lurie Try this on for size... Stylish professional woman at the helm of a successful certified B-corp business.  Sounds nice, right?  Well, meet your mentor, Jenelle Isaacson of Living Room Realty

Jenelle and I both grew our businesses within blocks of each other on Alberta Street in the late oughts, but it took nearly a decade before we would meet (at a private shopping party at entertainmentbartenders).  It didn't take but a minute to recognize a spark in her, a down to earth energy and optimism that I would be willing to wager has been a large key to her success.  She is a true leader, evidenced not only by the countless awards, the speaking engagements, the mulitple offices across the state and multiple broker's under her umbrella, but especially by the fact that when you mention her name to those under her wing they alight with compliments about her and what it's like to be a part of her orbit.

I just recently found inspiration from Jenelle myself when I read her opening note in the Living Room newsletter that arrived at our house last month.  It's no secret that Portland has been going through a rough patch and it can be hard to always keep our heads up, but Jenelle so eloquently reminded us to stay optimistic and remain curious about our amazing city.  She encouraged us all to take a walk through our neighborhoods and "open our eyes to the beauty of the local businesses in your area - run by some of the world's most talented chefs, artisans, designers, and thinkers - you will likely find yourself swept up in the affection you have for your hometown."  The article is beautiful, and personally it resonated with me in this moment.  I invite you to read the article (page 3) and similarly get swept up in Jenelle's optimism... for Portland, for life. Thanks Jenelle!

https://garnishapparel.com/blogs/garnish-apparel/meet-karen-marrongelle 2023-04-06T13:24:58-07:00 2023-04-06T13:26:12-07:00 Meet Karen Marrongelle Erica Lurie It's difficult to believe that Karen Marongelle's first recorded purchase at the shop dates back to 2009. Wow! To call her a loyal customer is indeed an understatement. She is as warm and gracious and well-rounded and stylish as they come...and now a long distance client living in the Washington, D.C. area. With a PhD in Mathematics Education, she ended up as both a professor and then a dean at Portland State University. Read on to learn how she became the Chief Operating Officer at the National Science Foundation. Wow. Wow. Wow. New superhero?!? The Unstoppable Karen M!!! You'll enjoy her responses.

Tell us a little about yourself. How did you end up in Washington? What does your day-to-day look like?

I'm originally from the East Coast. I grew up in a town outside of Philadelphia, Allentown (yes, like the Billy Joel song, if you remember that). I moved to Portland over twenty years ago and fell in love with Oregon. While I grew up thinking that I would move to New York City, the first time I visited Portland I knew it was the place for me. The landscape in the West, the ethos and values of the people, resonate with me. My husband and I were married in Portland (he's from Boston), and we had our daughter in Portland. She is a proud Oregonian!

I always loved learning and have a broad span of interests. Although I always enjoyed mathematics and computing, I also had strong interests in art, music and literature. My parents did not attend college and so as a first generation college student, my parents emphasized that I needed to study something that would lead to a job. I majored in mathematics and I snuck in a double-major in philosophy (Surprise, mom and dad, on graduation day!). I was at a small, liberal arts college and so spent a lot of time in the art studios, photography dark rooms and at the radio station. I also worked several jobs through college: bank teller, pharmacy technician, deli counter server, hardware store clerk (the list goes on and on). I really didn't know much about graduate school when I started college, but went on to earn a Masters Degree in Mathematics and a PhD in Mathematics Education (studying how people learn and how we teach collegiate mathematics), continuing to fuel my love of learning throughout my career.

Can you tell us a bit about your career? Describe the path that took you to National Science Foundation. Can you elaborate on your position? Have you encountered challenges in the workplace as a female?

I spent 20 years at Portland State University, first as a Professor of Mathematics and later as the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Portland State is an incredible place; it is a school that impacts and changes students' lives. My own journey into and through higher education, feeling deeply grateful for the opportunities that were opened to me, inspired me to work at Portland State. The National Science Foundation funded several of my projects, working to improve education for students at Portland State and working with mathematics teachers throughout Oregon to improve learning environments for K-12 students. As I got to know the Program Officers at NSF, they encouraged me to apply for a rotation position with the NSF. NSF employs a few hundred rotators; employees from universities, science museums and other scientific organizations who spend up to four years at NSF as employees (on leave or on rotation from their home institutions). I served as a rotator from 2007-2009 at the National Science Foundation and then returned to Portland State, working as a faculty member, helping my colleagues with their federal grant applications, and working for the state on higher education policy before starting as Dean in 2014 (and working closely with entertainmentbartenders gal Sona Andrews, who was the Provost when I was Dean -- we had to coordinate our outfits sometimes so that we were not both on campus wearing the same thing!). Then, NSF pulled me back! This time to lead the Directorate in which I had worked as a Program Officer. I oversaw close to €1B of federal funding in STEM education and education research investments. About a year and a half ago, the Director of the NSF asked me to take on the role of Chief Operating Officer, the second in command at NSF. I work closely with the Director and our leadership team to set priorities for science, engineering and education investments, distribute our €10B annual budget, partner with other federal agencies on issues of science, engineering and education, and partner with the network of colleges and universities throughout the United States and interested businesses and industries. NSF is unique because it is the only federal agency that funds foundational research in all areas of science and engineering. Your cellphone? The technology that powers your cell phone from chips to software to wifi and internet connections were all ideas funded by NSF decades ago. Importantly, NSF also funds basic research in the social, behavioral and economic sciences. NSF has always had a commitment to what we call Broadening Participation. This is the notion that every person should have the opportunity to succeed in the STEM disciplines (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). Some of our most exciting work at NSF is expanding opportunities and reaching new communities so that everyone across the country has the ability to contribute to STEM. More recently, we have been focused on developing new programs to more quickly move promising innovations into communities and societies to benefit individuals.

Women, including women of color, have made strides in the STEM disciplines over the past several decades. However, women continue to be underrepresented in earning degrees in certain STEM disciplines, continue to experience lower pay, and continue to be underrepresented in leadership positions. I have experienced incredible support throughout my career, from both men and women. Many women in STEM experience challenges as they pursue their education and in their workplaces: slights, unfounded perceptions, hostility and harassment. We have learned much about how to prevent and respond to these type of behaviour, but it is a constant challenge.

Did you have a turning point in your life, professional or otherwise?

My time as a rotating Program Officer at NSF was a turning point for me for several reasons. First, I experienced the great fulfillment and joy in enabling individuals and teams to take their great ideas to new heights, and to simply enable great ideas to be implemented. Second, I got the policy bug, so to speak, understanding the importance and impact of developing sound policy. Third, I realised the impact that I could have as a member of a team working together to improve STEM education and research at a national level was much greater than I could accomplish as an individual. This experience changed the trajectory of my career. I then had amazing mentors (like Sona) who both believed in me and provided me opportunities to continue to learn and grow.

As I learned more about higher education in the United States and STEM achievement, I also realized that I had overcome the statistics: a first-generation female student who earned a PhD in mathematics is not typical. Luckily, I didn't know it wasn't typical while I was pursuing my education and career path. This motivates me to mentor others, open up opportunities, and ensure pathways are visible.

What is one lesson you keep trying to learn but still struggle with?

The most fulfilling and most challenging aspect of my leadership work is motivating others and working in effective, innovative teams. Balancing the individual motivations with the vision of an organization is delicate, thoughtful work. It can be some of the most challenging, but when you make progress and breakthroughs, it is some of the most fulfilling.

On to some style questions. How has your sense of style changed over time?

I've always appreciated detail and I have focused more and more on detail in the pieces that I purchase. I like small, but impactful details that catch the eye. I've had to be more mindful of my clothing choices in these different leadership positions, but I always looked to not be cookie cutter in my fashion. I know the boundaries, and where I am comfortable pushing, and I will push. I like Erica's pieces so much because they are unique and can fulfill my sense of individuality, and I can style them to conform and not conform all at the same time.

What do you put on when you want to show the world you mean business? And how about when you really want to unplug?

I like bold colors and defined lines when I want to show that I mean business. When I want to unplug, I go with soft fabrics, flannels, and jeans. I equate unplugging with getting out into nature: skiing, hiking, camping, where clothes are functional.

Is there anything else you would like to share?

Thank you for this opportunity!

Trends: love them or leave them?  Not so fast, we say. There is a very healthy middle ground to be found.  I have never been someone to live and die by the trends, it's too much work, too wasteful, and well, trendy.  With that said, I do often look to them for inspiration and I do a bit of picking and choosing.  Here are some things I ask myself:
  • Does this trend feel like something that excites me, that I would WANT to wear, both now and in the future?
  • Will the pieces have staying power in my wardrobe instead of feeling "so last year"?
  • Are these colors that look good on me?
  • Does the trending silhouette flatter my figure?
  • Are there items that I already have in my closet that resemble what is trending.  Maybe it's time to dust them off and style them in a fresh new way?
Here are a few trends that I can get on board with this season (hint, some of this you may see in our upcoming collections as well):
Trend #1 is Perfectly Imperfect (say yes to raw edges!) in this Vogue article entitled: See How Vogue Editors are Getting Dressed for Fashion Week.  Our new Spot on Blazers fit the bill with a rough edge that takes them from square to saucy.  Pair them with our raw edged Wide Leg Zip PantWork Skirt or Work Pant and you are hitting another trend as well: Denim on Denim (trend #3 in this InStyle article).
Maxi Skirts and Knee Length Pencil Skirts are both on the docket this season.  We just recently introduced the Sloan Skirt as I was inspired by what I was seeing on the runway and I believe it's a great elevated classic that can boost your wardrobe for years to come.  You'll be excited to hear that a denim Sloan is in the works for this coming collection (again, two for one!).  On the maxi side, the Any Ocassion Skirt has been available in store for a few seasons.  I guess we were ahead of the curve on that one!
Mesh and Sheers.  I've always been a sucker for anything slightly see-through so to see they are both on trend this summer makes my heart sing. We already have the aforementioned Censored Top in the line up, along with our black and white mesh Scarlets and more mesh is on the way (namely a salmon colored Muscle Tee).  Plus, the new Simone Tops have that little dotted mesh insert that allow just enough "reveal" to keep things interesting...

Many of our clients get it, but some do not. And why would they if we are not educating them on what it takes to do what we do?  So we have decided to begin assembling a campaign to tell you!  We promise to make it interesting, informative, honest (at times painfully so), and perhaps even funny.  So we invite you to come along on our journey and follow us on social media, continue to follow our blog, and subscribe to our newsletter.

Lastly, there is one favor that we ask of you… tell your friends about entertainmentbartenders if you think they would be interested in our beautiful pieces. Thank you in advance and thank you for caring for us and showing us in all of the beautiful ways that you do. Your photos, your emails, your texts really picked us up during what has been a kind of rough week.  Spread the word (referals are the best) and keep that love coming our way! We truly love you too!

https://garnishapparel.com/blogs/garnish-apparel/garnish-hacks-for-gifting-clothes 2022-12-08T14:34:27-08:00 2022-12-08T14:38:22-08:00 GARNISH HACKS FOR GIFTING CLOTHES Erica Lurie

Once the holidays are in full swing, thousands of people storm shopping malls and online stores in search of the desired gifts for their loved ones. Some look forward to this tradition, but for others the choice of gifts is a difficult dilemma - how to make sure that the recipient will like the gift? Plus - we would like to believe some of you are really trying to shop with entertainmentbartenders and other local shops and not at the malls.

Today we will talk about how to choose the right clothing as a gift. Many people find that gifting clothes is very complicated, be it guessing the correct size or really concentrating on the person's likes or dislikes. Let's take a closer look at how we can solve them.

Who can you gift clothes to?

Let's call a spade a spade... many people prefer to choose a wardrobe on their own (others hate to shop!?!), but if you know a person well then you can surprise them with something fresh from your perspective. Therefore, we advise you to give clothes only to your closest relatives (mother, children, spouse) or best friends as you will have an idea of their taste, preferences, and size (check some of the labels in their closet). Clothes as a gift to a distant cousin or boss is a bit more risky. If you want to surprise your colleagues with a gift related to fashion but don't know their style for sure, booking a entertainmentbartenders private stylist appointment for them might be a fun option.

How to choose the right clothes?

Remember a few important life hacks:

- If the person has repeatedly spoken out about the fact that striped dresses are terrible, don't try to change their minds (even if you think they would rock stripes). Try looking at the clothing you're considering gifting through their eyes.

- Make sure to read the fabric label, even if you do not pay attention to these when buying your own clothes. Synthetic fabrics can cause unpleasant allergic reactions for some folks. And some folks are all about easy-care garments as opposed to their "dry clean only" counterparts. Consider all of these as you select your gifts.

- Ask the shop what their return and exchange policy is (just in case your gift doesn't work out).

How to properly wrap clothes?

- Remove (or obscure) the price from the price tag (without taking the price tag off the garment).

- In no case should you throw away the receipt from the item until the person has tried it on, but do not give the receipt along with the gift. If it doesn't fit, you can give your loved the receipt so they have the opportunity to exchange it for a different size.

- Even when it is recommended to wash clothes before wearing, do not do it yourself. Your loved one will wash it if necessary.

- Wrap the clothes in a box with ribbon and other decorative ornaments or place in a bag with tissue. (entertainmentbartenders can wrap gifts purchased in the store for you!)

What if you still do not know the size or taste of your loved one?

Gift Certificate:

Almost all stores now provide the opportunity to issue a gift certificate. You can save yourself the pain of choosing by giving a gift certificate.

Shopping Together:

private shopping party is a great way to spend time with friends, family, or colleagues. Sip wine as designer Erica Lurie and her stylists select outfits for you and your entourage at your own private gathering!

https://garnishapparel.com/blogs/garnish-apparel/how-to-match-bright-colors-garnish-tips-and-tricks 2022-11-16T08:41:09-08:00 2022-11-16T15:12:53-08:00 HOW TO MATCH BRIGHT COLORS: entertainmentbartenders Tips and Tricks Erica Lurie This season, we invite you to try unexpected color combinations that you have never dared to try before. Here’s how to masterfully combine the brightest colors while still feeling as comfortable as possible.

There are some days when you want more drastic style changes. For example, try an unexpected style of clothing or a combination of the most catchy colors that will definitely stand out from the crowd. At first, such experiments may scare you, especially if you have never worn bright shades before. The same rule applies here as with red lipstick. If you have not used it every day before, the reflection in the mirror may shock you at first. After a while, however, you will look quite familiar. And after a dozen appearances in public, you will no longer perceive yourself differently. The same thing happens with style experiments: the main thing is to start, and then you will be unstoppable. For those who are just getting started with color, we have compiled a simple instruction in five tips on how to combine the brightest shades without feeling uncomfortable.

Try different shades of the same color

Instead of explosive combinations of several colors, try different tones of the same color. For example, combine a dusty pink sweater with a fuschia midi skirt. This way your outfit will be more interesting while the look will not be overly eye-catching.

Mix bright colors with white or black

Bright shades have a magical property: they can be self-sufficient in a look and at the same time perfectly compliment other dominant tones. If you want to put two bright shades in one look, and understand that the third one will be superfluous, mix them with black or white. For example, a bright pink hoodie can be mixed with classic black pants and a bright sleeveless sweater can be combined with a white long sleeve underneath.

Start with subdued tones

If you can’t decide on a bright red yet, try burgundy shades to start with. If hot pink seems too bold for you, try on a dusty pink shade. Such muted shades seem more restrained in everyday life.

Bright accessories

Accessories are an important part of any outfit. They help to make the look complete and place the necessary accents. A great way to dilute a monochrome look is to put on a bright belt. Today, the belt is most often worn over clothing. Therefore, the choice of accessory should be approached with great care. Try to mix a black dress with a thin red belt to make your outfit more impressive and original.

Multicolor

Most often, colorful dresses are chosen by cheerful romantics. Some people think that dresses with a colorful pattern fit only slender figures. In fact, this is absolutely not the case - this kind of a dress will fit any body type if you choose the right style. Even if you are used to dressing up in monochrome colors, try to wear a multicolor cocktail dress or top. In this outfit you will surely attract admiring glances.

You just need to start, because over time experiments with color will open up your options and expand your style. Before you know, it will become a second nature.

Talk about dream team and dream product all wrapped into one! Walk into their brick-and-mortar and you're all but guaranteed to feel incredibly welcome and hungry simultaneously.
Melissa began Missionary over a decade ago and continues to flourish on NE Glisan Street near the Laurelhurst neighborhood. What makes Missionary so good? The products are dairy-free, gluten-free, vegan, AND THEY'RE CHOCOLATE! It was quite clear from our visit that each piece is made with great attention to detail and a whole lot of love.
Amongst our favorites during our visit were the seasonal Blood Orange Cardamom Truffle and the Earl Grey Truffles. The Chocolate Covered Potato Chips were standouts, as were the Chocolate Covered Pretzels. We watched with anticipation as marshmallows were covered in chocolate and then sprinkled with crushed candy canes after their ride through the conveyor belt...heavenly...and we half-expected to see Lucy and Elthel stuffing their faces at the end of the belt. We would have been very happy to stand in their places.
Run, don't walk, to Missionary Chocolate in NE Portland! We're told you ought to consider ordering early for holiday treats in the next couple of months. What great hostess gifts though!!! And they ship as well!
Thanks so much to Melissa and all of the folks at Missionary for making our visit just so darned good! And watch for a few process videos on our Instagram and Facebook pages...they even poured some chocolate into our entertainmentbartenders-sized molds while we were there! So very fun! If it's vegan, dairy-free, and gluten-free, it's essentially health food..... Enjoy!

https://garnishapparel.com/blogs/garnish-apparel/out-of-africa-namibia-2022 2022-09-01T20:46:22-07:00 2022-09-01T20:46:23-07:00 Out of Africa: Namibia 2022 Erica Lurie For three weeks in June and July, my hubby (the best damn trip planner ever) and my two adventurous children (Gwendolyn, age 11 and Everett, age 8) camped our way through Namibia. It's tucked above South Africa on the western side of the continent. It was their winter so although it was a bit windy and oh so dry, the temps were perfect, the scenery fantastic, and the wildlife unforgettable!
For me, being in nature is so many things: an elixir, a chance to decompress, a chance to gather my thoughts and ideas, a chance to savor the moment. This trip provided all of the above.  How can you look at these gorgeous zebras and not feel supercharged with design inspiration!  And there is nothing quite like hunkering down at a watering hole and waiting an hour to see giraffes emerge from the brush and cautiously make their way to the water's edge for a drink.  Such a huge and mighty animal, but they are keenly aware of how exposed they are and thererfor don't take that risk lightly.
I was also struck by the variety and sheer number of animals that would gather at a watering hole... the scenes we experienced felt straight from a Disney movie - I could hardly believe they happen in real life!
Then there is the scenery!  From gorgeous windswept dunes to grassy plains with undulating mountains, the soft colors were captivating and I feel like I could build collections upon collections inspired by the colors alone.
Of course I took over a thousand photos so if the tip of the sand dune is not enough to satiate your curiosity, pop on by the shop to see more in person, or see my favorite 50 photos by following this link. Here are a few more though to wet your whistle...

As it turns out, she's a neighbor to the shop and represents most of NW Portland and part of Beaverton (District 17) as a State Senator aaannnnd she is as down to earth as they come. We had an amazing impromptu stylist appointment that day and she has been a loyal client ever since. I had the opportunity to ask her a few questions and I've no doubt you'll appreciate her responses (read on).  And if you are interested in asking a few questions of your own, please join us at the shop for a Meet and Greet on April 12th at 5:00.  Please RSVP here.

So, tell us a little about yourself and how did you find your way into politics?

I’m a family physician by profession and had been involved with advocating for access to high-quality, affordable healthcare for about a decade prior to making the switch. Fundamentally I believe Oregon can be the healthiest state in the nation, but only if we understand the interconnections between health, education, economic development, environmental issues, housing, nutrition, etc. As a family physician I saw these connections every day and wanted to bring that perspective to policy-making at the state level. It’s certainly not what I thought I’d be doing at this point in my life but I’m glad I ended up here.

How long have you been in office? Why state legislature?

I won my seat in an appointment process at the very end of 2011, sworn in January 5, 2012, so I’ve been in office just over 10 years now. Working at the state level allows me to help people in every corner of Oregon.
What geographic area do you represent?

Right now I represent most of NW Portland, a chunk of NE unincorporated Washington County, and about ⅓ of Beaverton. However the redistricting process changed the boundaries of my district a lot, so this year I’m running in my new district which is virtually everything north of Hwy 26 (including most of downtown Portland) and east of 185th st, plus Cathedral Park area in St. Johns.
.
What are you most proud of in regards to your career over the years?

That’s a tough one. I’ve passed several important public health bills, including raising the legal age for tobacco & e-cigarettes to 21 (third state in the nation to do so) and implementing the nation’s first statewide, universally-offered nurse home visiting program for families with new babies. As Co-Chair of the Ways & Means (budget) committee I’ve helped secure over €1.5 billion for housing, over €500 million for behavioral health, €300 million for summer learning programs, and so much more.
.
Do you still have time to practice medicine while being a senator?

I used to do urgent care when we weren’t in session, but my current role as Co-Chair of W&M makes that pretty tough, so I still do some teaching but don’t see patients.
.
What or who inspires you?

This will sounds a little dorky but I am inspired by anyone who shows up to really do something well. That could be a janitor, a full-time parent, a police officer, a business owner, an artist, etc. If you care about what you do, and work to get better at it, then you inspire me.
.
What is your superpower?

Connecting - I’m really, really good at connecting with lots of different kinds of people, and then helping them connect with other people so they can help each other.
.
Favorite book of all time?

When I was young, it was a memoir called Northern Nurse (can’t remember the author’s name) about a young woman from Norway who becomes a nurse in far north Canada. One of the most powerful books I’ve read, that I recommend to lots of people, is The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down, by Ann Fadiman. It’s an incredibly compelling story about a young Hmong girl with epilepsy and her family’s interactions with the Western medical system.
.
Why do you feel it is important to shop local?

Let me count the ways. Small businesses create the vast majority of jobs. Shopping local encourages Oregonians’ entrepreneurial spirit. I like buying items that most people don’t have. I love building relationships with business people in my community.
.
Besides you, who is the most stylish senator in the Oregon state senate?

Kate Lieber & James Manning
.
How did you discover entertainmentbartenders?

I was walking up 12th and saw that cool blue & white striped jacket in the window!
And what about entertainmentbartenders will keep you coming back?

I love that Erica & Paul know me, know what I like, push me to try new pieces. I love that they’ve helped me expand my style a lot. I love supporting local businesses. Oh, and of course the clothes are amazing - interesting, comfortable, fit well, made locally (not just designed locally), and reasonably priced.
.
You recently did a bit of a style reboot with us, what prompted that and what came out of it?

I was a little stuck, stylistically. I also had a good traditional business wardrobe and plenty of really casual clothes, but not much in between. I can wear clothes from entertainmentbartenders in a lot of contexts.
.
Do your peers in Salem know about entertainmentbartenders?

Oh of course! I’m getting lots of compliments on my new outfits and I tell everyone about getting them at entertainmentbartenders.

We’re so excited to host your house party/meet and greet with you on April 12th.  Why do you take the time from your busy schedule to do such events?

As I mentioned before, I’m a connector. I love meeting new people and being inspired by them. I want people living and working in my district to know who I am, know that I’m accessible to them and want to hear from them, and I want to know them!

I first met Melissa Busch as I have a number of clients, through my daughter Gwnedolyn's school. She has been a delight to get to know and somehow as a mom, a nurse, and a candidate for the Oregon State Senate, she manages a calmness and positivity like few others. She is hoping to represent the folks in Senate District 16, encompassing Warren, TIllamook, Astoria, and neighboring communities. Her candid, thoughtful responses to my questions did not disappoint. Read on to learn more about Melissa and also join us at the shop for a Meet and Greet on April 12th at 5:00.  Please RSVP here.

Tell us a little about yourself and how did you find your way into politics?

I was born and raised in the Midwest and moved to Oregon when I was 18. It’s been home ever since. I initially got a degree in Religious Studies at Lewis & Clark College but ultimately went back to school to become a nurse. I’ve been a practicing nurse for the past 13 years, initially working in the hospital setting and then moving into community-based nursing. I currently serve as a Home Health nurse, meaning I visit people who need care but have a difficult time getting out of their homes to access it. The last several years working in the community and seeing the struggles so many people face is really what propelled me into politics. I see firsthand the difficult decisions people make when trying to get healthy and stay healthy, like paying rent or buying groceries, going to work for a paycheck or staying home with an ill or aging family member, and paying for life saving medications or keeping the electricity on.

Did you have a turning point in your life, what happened?

When I was 15, living in my hometown in Kansas, I found myself in my local public health clinic, where a nurse told me I was pregnant. I spent the months that followed preparing to become a young mother, navigating social services and trying to access the things I would need to be successful  Ultimately I found I was not able to be the parent I wanted to be at that time. Instead I chose to expand my family beyond blood-ties, planned an open adoption for my daughter, and became a birth mother instead. As a teenager, making pregnancy and parenting decisions, I was introduced to the ways that public policies impact our personal lives. Now, 25 years later, as a nurse myself, and a mother of a beautiful blended family, I have come to understand that connection even more deeply. This is really my “why”: it’s an experience that has shaped every aspect of my life moving forward, including my politics and my commitment to ensuring that all people have access to all aspects of health care and wrap-around services, like child care, education, housing, and transportation.

Why state legislature?

There are so many barriers in the way to creating healthy, thriving, equitable communities, and I want to work to fix that. As a nurse, there is only so much I can do; we need smart policy solutions to address the problems that so many Oregonians are facing and those decisions are often made at the state legislative level. We need voices of nurses, mothers, and working people at the decision-making table.

What geographic area would you be representing?

Senate District 16 is a geographically expansive district, including rural Multnomah County (Sauvie Island, portions of the Skyline Ridge), rural Washington County (North Plains, portions of Cornelius, and Banks), Columbia County (Scappoose, St. Helens, Venonia, Clatskanie), Clatsop County (Astoria, Warrenton, Gearhart, Seaside, Cannon Beach, Arch Cape), and Tillamook County (Manzanita, Garabaldi, Tillamook, Pacific City, Neskowin). The district is primarily rural but has diverse interests, economies, opportunities, and concerns.

What are you most proud of in regards to your career over the years?

I am continuously humbled by what I learn from my patients and their families and the willingness of people to let me into their homes and private lives. So often my clients thank me, but that appreciation goes both ways; the insights I have gained from the people I serve has been so formative, and keeps me pushing ahead through the demands of the campaign trail.

What are your goals if become a Senator?

My goal is to work collaboratively with legislators, stakeholders, and partner organizations to address there issues impacting all Oregonians, especially our most underrepresented and marginalized communities including our rural and coastal communities. I want to ensure all Oregonians have access to affordable, quality healthcare, childcare, eldercare, and education, with a safe place to live, a good living-wage job, and an environment that is thriving and sustainable.

How will you incorporate being a mother, a nurse, and a representative into real time experience? (BTW, check out Melissa's bad ass "MOM" tattoo above, love it!)

My lived experience as a working mother of school-aged kids and a daughter to aging parents means I understand the demands of balancing the responsibilities of family life with professional obligations, as well as the challenges of severe childcare shortages, and issues our public schools are facing due to persistent underfunding and limited resources to meet the needs of our kids. As nurse who spends my days visiting patients and families in the community, I have an intimate understanding of the lives of community members struggling to access not only healthcare but many other fundamental human needs, like housing and food.

What or who inspires you?

I am inspired by the number of women stepping into leadership roles at all levels of office, from school boards to city councils to the state legislature. It is critical we have representation and diverse perspectives at decision-making tables, and having more women, BIPOC, and LGBTQ+ folks elected into these roles is essential. I’m also continuously inspired by the young people in our communities; they show so much resiliency, compassion, and vision for the future, which drives me to strive harder for them.

Why do you feel it is important to shop local?

Local businesses are the backbones of our communities, creating economic opportunities through job creation and financial contributions with dollars that stay in our communities rather than going to large out-of-state corporations.  I look for every opportunity to shop local for everything from clothing to restaurants to gift-giving.

What do you put on when you want to show the world you mean business? And then what do you wear when you want to unplug from work?

I love a good pantsuit or jumpsuit when I need to feel confident and strong. When I get a chance to unplug, I’m a jeans and t-shirt or easy button-up shirt kind of gal, or a summer dress and sandals if it’s a warm sunny day.

How has your sense of confidence changed over time?

When I was younger I tended to chase styles a bit more, trying to keep up with new trends or wear what everyone else was wearing (this also translated into wearing a lot more “fast fashion”). As I have gotten older, I have come to have a better sense of myself and my own style, which has translated into feeling more comfortable in my own skin and confident in stylistic choices. In turn, that has also meant I tend to invest more in pieces of clothing that I plan to keep longer-term, creating a less-is-more mainframe, and encouraging me to vote with my dollar whenever possible.

What is the best style advice you have ever received?

Wear what makes you feel comfortable and confident, it will show.

We’re so excited to host your house party/meet and greet with you on April 12th.  Why do you take the time from your busy schedule to do such events?

This race is critical for Senate District 16 and the entire state of Oregon. It is a time of great change in the Oregon Legislature and we are preparing to enter a legislative session that will be addressing issues around healthcare, housing, climate change, and so much more. Whomever is elected to Senate District 16 will represent the constituents of the district, but ultimately the decisions made in the Legislature impact each and everyone of us across the state. That said, it’s so important for me to hear from people about what issues matter most to them, and the only way to do that is to make myself available and accessible. I look forward to taking time to meet you all on April 12th, and at more events to come.

I recently had the pleasure of meeting, styling, and photographing Megan Carle and she is a blast!  Megan won a stylist appointment at a charity auction and decided it was time for a refresh.  She was tired of the "Covid-sweatpant phase" and needed to feel her fabulous self again so in she came.  We sat down and asked her a few questions... I think you'll enjoy the answers.

We hear you are writing a book, tell us about it.

What an undertaking!! It’s a book about workplace culture, healthy and unhealthy markers, and what happens when those unhealthy behaviors pile up. My hope is that it will shine a light on a subject and experience that is known as “the undiscussable,” while providing targets with a blueprint of how to identify bullying in the workplace and a playbook for what to do about it.

And if you are not currently experiencing bullying in the workplace, can you still gleam some nuggets from it?

With 73 million people experiencing workplace bullying, chances are if you’re not a target, you’ve witnessed it or you’ve heard about it. My hope is that we can all help each other out with more information, connection, and empathy.

Bullying certainly is not limited to the workplace… do you have a mantra that you endorse for dealing with a bully?

Yes—It’s not about you (the target).

(I think this should be her book jacket photo, don't you??)

When you are not writing what can we find you doing?

I consult with brands in various capacities, as well as provide executive coaching. I spend a lot of time watching my teen children’s soccer and volleyball games. I love listening to music, seeing a great show, walking our dog, Blue, and hopping on the Peloton.

What are you most proud of in regards to your career over the years?

My passion and curiosity for the people and the work and that I was able to show my children what it means to work and learn.

What or who inspires you?

Oh boy. My children. My husband. A great song. A beautiful day in the PNW.

What does success look like?

Health and happiness for those I hold dear.

How do you confront your fears (about life, about work, about yourself)?

I’m a dive-through-the-portal-of-fear type of person. Most of the time. It’s the only way. And then other times I’m a pull-the-covers-over-my-head person!

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

The win is walking away.

What is your superpower?

Fierce protection of my children and family. And a great left hand drive to the bucket.

What is the one lesson you keep trying to learn, but struggle with?

I am worthy.

Knowing what you know now, what advice would you give your younger self?

Ask for help. You need it.

We’re so curious to know what book is on your bedside table at the moment?

Audience-ology by Kevin Goetz about testing movies pre-release. For movie buffs and marketers, it’s a great read. In the queue: Mastering Civility by Christine Porath. Always nearby: Nicholas Sparks, Jodi Picoult, and of course Emily Giffin.

And what podcasts do you listen to, what websites do you read with great regularity?

I love 10,000NOs with Matt del Negro and The Plot Thickens with Ben Mankiewicz.  Also Mandy Lehto - Enough and Travia Steward - Breakthrough.

Music?

Lauryn Hill, Mary J Blige, and always, always, always TLC

What is a funny little secret about you that you are willing to reveal?

In my mind, I am still a high school basketball player.

Tell us about your style before walking into entertainmentbartenders.

Non-existent. Very covid-chic. Back in the day, I loved a simple look that combined feminine with tomboy/rocker. A waxed jean with a feminine blouse, jacket and acne boot. A floral dress with a leather jacket and boot. I am not a shopper. I love a template to follow.

How has your style evolved over the years?

Evolved or eroded?! I just have a different uniform. Very casual.

How has raising children affected your style?

I buy larger sizes!

And how has your sense of confidence changed over time?

When I worked, I felt like I “suited up” each day and I really enjoyed that. As I transitioned out of fast-paced, hard-charging corporate life, my confidence took a hit and it was reflected in my style choices. I disappeared a bit.

When you want to feel fabulous and confident, what do you put on?

My Grandma Regis’s fur coat over a Liberty of London dress, beautiful heels and Creed perfume.

What is the best style advice you have ever received?

Don’t pluck your eyebrows.

Do you have a style icon?

Anything by Isabel Marant.

What is your favorite body part and why?

My eyes. (and those unplucked brows).

How did you discover entertainmentbartenders?

I was the winning bid at a school auction for a style consult and I finally treated myself to it. I’m so glad I did. It really put the kick back into my style step.

And what about entertainmentbartenders will keep you coming back?

entertainmentbartenders is a gem of a place run by a jewel called Erica. The pieces are simple, stylish, and made with care. Plus the vibe of the boutique is very cool.

You recently did a bit of a style reboot with us, what prompted that and what came out of it?

I finally had enough of the covid-sweatpant phase and thought it was beyond time to show myself some self-love. I am so glad I did. I went in with a very narrow idea of my style and came away with so much more. Working with Erica reminded me that I used to really enjoy getting dressed for work. She reintroduced me to a part of me that I had shelved.

What is the piece you are most wearing from your stylist appointment?

I left with three things: confidence, my curves, and the piece I’m wearing the most is a black skirt, which is hilarious to me, because I think my opening line to Erica during our consult was, “I don’t wear skirts!” I love it!

What do you wish we would add to our collection?

I’m all about the one-stop shopping so maybe eggs, milk, bread? Erica has it figured out!!

Why get DRESSED these days?  And HOW?  There are far too many reasons not to wear "real clothes" these days.  "We're in the middle of a pandemic, I'm not at my ideal weight, I have nowhere to go", yada, yada.  The other day a client was in and when she looked in the mirror before trying anything on she said "I can't believe I left the house in these clothes."  Well, it's high time you hit the refresh button and upped your style game, if not for any other reason than to make you feel better!  And if you ask me, that is all the reason you need.

Our early spring collection is just what the doctor ordered.  "But Spring?" you say?  Therein lies the beauty of this collection... it's perfect for now, for three months from now, or for fall - it's all in how you style it!  And lucky for you, you know some great stylists that can show you how.  Read on for some tips....
Tip #1: Layering!
Layering can help you achieve so many things... conveying the season, dressing a piece down, providing warmth or allowing you to strip down if you are too warm.  Let's look more closely at a couple of these.
Spring pieces can often be worn in the cooler months if you pile them on correctly. And try to think out of the box (or we can do it for you)... the middle photo features the Cowl Neck Zip Dress as a VEST!  Invest in some great undergarments like high quality camisoles, faux leather leggings, and layering long sleeve tops to help.
Layering can also dress a piece down (something we might be inclined to do these days).  Throw a denim jacket over just about anything and you are never overdressed.  Our Summer Jacket demonstrates this well in the first image.
Tip #2: Accessorize appropriately
Accessories can tell quite the story.  You can use color, weight, or even texture to convey a season.  See how the outfit on the left feels more appropriate for cooler weather (and quite frankly IS more appropriate for cooler weather) with a scarf?  Now look at the middle image... the necklace lightens up the look and brings it into warmer days.
Footwear can do the same thing.  Boots, booties, etc now, sandals, white tennis shoes in a couple months.
Tip #3: Dress for YOU
Gone are the days when you had all these "rules" to follow for fashion.  One of the great things about now is that anything goes!  I've been reading about this in fashion magazines and I love it.  There has never been a better time to take some chances in your fashion... try that print mix that you've been a little intimated by, show your personality if your inclined to.  And if all of this just sounds far too scary just come on in, we'll not only put together outfits that feel like the very best version of you, but we'll also give you tips to do it on your own at home!  Getting dressed in the morning should empower you, not overwhelm you.  And we're here to help.

Erica Lurie I get it, it's hard to get dressed up these days.  So with that in mind, we went ahead and created your capsule COVID wardrobe, one that can take you from the couch to the store without stopping off in the closet to change.  What are we doing these days?  We're hanging out with the kids, we're watching movies, we're working from home, we're getting groceries, and if we're feel saucy (and motivated) we're having backyard BBQs.  What I'm hearing from you is that you want your wardrobe to reflect that.  So here are a few outfit ideas to get you started and more designs are in the hopper...
Let's start with a good pair of joggers.  The Signe Joggers are cute AND comfy.  For those more daring try the Obsidian colorway. And if faux leather is a stretch opt for Journey instead.
Now let's build on those with a casual top like the Kennedy Sweater
Or the Katrina top in either When things get crazy or Subtle Stripes...
Lastly, for those chilly mornings throw on a Ruth Sweater to top it all off.
There is no need to suffer for fashion, be comfortable and stylish at the same time (Ok, maybe trade out the above pictured booties for your favorite kicks - that is totally legit).  Just remember, when you look good, you feel good (and we all could use that these days).
Need help?  We're here for you... call, drop by, FaceTime, whatever feels good to you.

We get it, you need a bit of inspiration these days...

This is why we are starting the Outfit of the Week. And we're kicking it off with the perfect outfit as it offers versatility beyond words.  Wear it as an ensemble or pull it apart and get
    • a dress that can be dressed up or down
    • a belt that goes with dresses, jeans, sweaters, or even coats
    • joggers that can be worn around the house, to get groceries, or to the club
    • a sweater that you can throw on with everything you own

Not only does this outfit work for the changing weather that we see this time of year, it also works for the changing temperatures our own bodies sometimes feel throughout the day.  Oh and did I mention the outfit as a whole and all pieces in it are season-less? And the best part...  it's all 20% off through June 2nd.  Click here to shop.

Need ideas of more ways to maximize the styling ideas for the items in the OOTW?  Here are a few...

For the joggers: pair them with a tee shirt and kicks, or a nice top as in the many examples below.

And the Sweater: Pair it with the aforementioned joggers and tee, throw it over a dress or top and skirt, anything, really... anything.

The dress can be worn on it's own or over pants, belted or not...

All in all, it's a great time to play around with your wardrobe a bit.  Look for ways to gain versatility.  Have questions?  Book an appointment with us, we're here for you.  XOXO, Erica

Local organizations step up to provide face coverings for Port workforce

As the PDX Airport and our marine terminals remain open during Governor Kate Brown’s COVID-19 “Stay Home, Save Lives” order – providing critical infrastructure for the region – our top priority has been the health and safety of all those who continue to show up for work.

We continue to evolve health and safety policies for our facilities and our workforce, always following the lead of local and federal public health experts. That includes a recent shift in early April. Following the guidance of the CDC and Multnomah County Public Health, all Port of Portland employees who had to report to job sites were required to wear face coverings.

We were clear with our employees: a cloth face covering is not meant to protect you from getting sick, but it’s a critical tool to help slow the spread of COVID-19. It reduces the risk of individuals spreading the virus to others, like coworkers or travelers coming through PDX. Growing evidence shows that many with COVID-19 have no symptoms, yet we can still spread it to others unknowingly.

Employees were eager to do what they could to protect community members.

But while demand was high for face coverings, supply was low. Just as our region has done since COVID-19 started to spread – when distilleries began producing hand sanitizer – local organizations stepped up to support workers who continue to report for duty.

In the last two weeks, we received 700 cloth face coverings the Port ordered from the local apparel store entertainmentbartenders. entertainmentbartenders shifted its focus from limited-edition apparel to face-covering production shop in the last few weeks – and owner Erica is able to keep three local seamstresses employed with the work.

As Erica shared with us, this work has kept her busy. “We typically make about 40 to 60 pieces a week. This week, we made 1,400! We’ve got things dialed now. We’re able to produce about 200 masks a day going forward.”

Erica Lurie Oh how we love our entertainmentbartenders Gals. Continuing with our behind-the-scenes profiles of our client models, we're thrilled to introduce you all to the lovely Jeanette! Earlier this month, we had the pleasure of meeting her at one of our private shopping parties. She was such a wonderful client right off the bat and also happened to look fabulous in EVERYTHING. We're thrilled to have her as both a member of the entertainmentbartenders community and now, as one of our amazing models. Here are some facts about her!

What do you like to do with your free time?
I volunteer, tend my witchy herb garden, and try to keep balance in the home.

What do you/did you do in your professional life?
I am an intuitive energy healer in my professional life. My own healing journey led me on a path to energy work 30 years ago. It resonated so deeply that I felt like I had found my mother tongue!

What brings you joy in your life?
Bollywood dancing is just about the greatest thing ever. It makes me feel joyous from the tip of my little toes all the way to my fingertips.

How and when did you first discover entertainmentbartenders?
I attended a fundraising event for Ninety-nine girlfriends at entertainmentbartenders in January and was surprised to see innovative designs and styles that actually looked good on me. I'd been plotting to go to this boutique with a girlfriend and this fundraiser seemed like a great opportunity to check it out. I'm so glad that I did.

How has entertainmentbartenders impacted your style or fashion sense?
It has encouraged me to take greater risks with my style. It is easy to get comfortable and not stretch with fashion as you get older. entertainmentbartenders gave me the freedom to step confidently into something fresh and stylish. I felt like I could play with my clothing, and I haven't felt that in a while.

What is your favorite entertainmentbartenders piece in your current wardrobe?  How and where do you like to wear it?
I love the Vixen dress, but for everyday - my python pants are my favorite! They're sleek, sexy and stylish. I dress them up, and I dress them down. You can't go wrong in this pair.

Was this your first time modelling? How did it feel? Was it easier or harder than you expected?
I have done a fashion show in years past, but I've never done a shoot like this with just me and the camera flashing every 3 seconds. It was intimidating! I channeled my two teenage girls though and imaged what they would do (think America's Next Top Model). That helped me to relax and enjoy this crazy moment. (Plus, the music helped!)

What piece did you feel best in when you modeled? (And if you like to include why please go for it.)
I loved the Vixen dress. It felt comfortable, sexy, versatile and easy to dance in. What more could I want?

    Thanks Jeanette! xoxo

What do you like to do with your free time?
I love hanging out with friends, listening to music and going to the Gorge.

What did you do in your professional life?
Initially I developed and manufactured medical devices for treating patients with cardiac arrhythmias. Later, I helped create three start-up companies in Germany that designed and produced spinal implants to help treat patients with spinal disc disease.

What brings you joy in your life?
Being with my wife and friends, eating great food and being with happy people. After traveling for most of my career, I take great joy in the simple pleasures of life.

How and when did you first discover entertainmentbartenders?
I don’t know! It was at least five years ago that I fell in love with Erica and the entertainmentbartenders Gals!

How has entertainmentbartenders impacted your style of fashion sense?
Well, I've always loved well designed, stylish clothing so in that sense it wasn’t a major change. However, Erica and her team have certainly expanded my comfort zone which has given me more range in what I enjoy wearing. I’m also delighted that I can support a local business that designs and makes the clothes in Portland, and that entertainmentbartenders provides support for so many worthwhile causes in our community.

What is your favorite entertainmentbartenders piece in your current wardrobe? How and where do you like to wear it?

This is like asking which of your children is your favorite! The pieces I wear the most are the stranded leather necklaces (still in stock!). They go with absolutely everything and get compliments constantly. I guess the piece that I fell in love with the moment I saw it was the "Brooke Dress - Great Exit” which was a dress created in conjunction with local artist Jasper York. The dress is an absolute stunner, and I wore it to the Human Rights Campaign national dinner in DC. I felt absolutely radiant.

Was this your first time modeling? How did it feel? Was it easier or harder than you expected?

Yes, this was my first time modeling! It was very exciting, but also quite hectic in creating so many looks quickly. I think it was both harder and easier than I expected — harder to do the actual modeling without looking wooden, but easier because there were so many pictures that at least a few had to be decent!

What piece did you feel best in the you modeled?

The “Art Deco Bess Dress” made me feel fantastic. It fit great, and it felt really fun and flirty. I know I was smiling the whole time I wore it which is always a good sign!

    Thanks Jennifer! xoxo

Our whirlwind step into January started off with a feature in yet another fashion show: Shift Into Style 2019. We had the honor of sending models down the runway in some of the newest pieces to hit the shop, and we got to do it alongside so many of our favorite designers here in PDX. The setup of the show was truly one of a kind - taking place at Mercedes Benz of Wilsonville, Shift Into Style was a unique intertwinement of fabric, metal and local talent. We've never seen anything like it before and we were truly honored to participate.

Many thanks to the photographers on hand who took so many great shots of the looks! Below is a roundup of the outfits we showcased, featuring photography from Dan Webb, Ron Hope, Toan LeStephan Partipilo and Dien Do. Each image links back to the photographer that took the shot. Featuring Artistic Director Sarah Slipper and Lead Dancer Andrea Parson, we gave these gals the entertainmentbartenders makeover and watched them rock the clothing in ways they have never been moved before. Photographer Gia Goodrich was a magician behind the lens - she captured the flow of the dancers beautifully and it was an enlightening experience being able to witness her work. All three women are incredibly talented and it was an absolute honor being involved in this collaborative effort. Many thanks to Kristen and May of Artslandia for including us!

https://garnishapparel.com/blogs/garnish-apparel/sneak-peak-garnish-x-jasper-york 2019-01-15T18:15:00-08:00 2019-01-30T15:02:25-08:00 Sneak Peek - GARNISH X JASPER YORK Erica Lurie We're thrilled to give you the FIRST official sneak peek at the newest collaboration to hit Portland! For the past few months, Erica has been teaming up with local PDX artist Jasper York on a collection that beautifully merges two different art forms - feminine, raw hand rendered paintings with the structural silhouettes of entertainmentbartenders.  The idea was sparked last fall when Max McDermott from Artslandia, helped us shoot our stylist appointment video and then mentioned to Erica that his mom was an amazing artist in her own right.  It only took a few scrolls through her Instagram for Erica to instantly fall in love.
    ...
To begin the collaboration, Erica met with Jasper and they discussed entertainmentbartenders designs and paintings that might pair well together.  Then Jasper created a series of custom pieces for entertainmentbartenders so Erica could play with her very own Jaspers that had never been released.  The paintings were scanned in to produce digital renditions and from there the two worked together to create original textiles using both scatter printing and engineered prints.

For some silhouettes they created a scatter print from a single Jasper painting.  This is created by taking the digitized artwork and using Photoshop to clone it and place it at juxtaposing angles, thereby revealing an all over repeated print.  The print is then placed into pattern pieces and sent to a local fabric printing studio.  At the studio, they will create a marker (a layout of all of the pattern pieces to yield the best use of the fabric) and print from there.  The process they use is a no water process called sublimation dye wherein the artwork is first printed on a type of paper and then heat pressed onto the fabric (see photo below).

For illustrations with one large painting the placement is so specific that we used engineered printing to ensure each face is perfectly cropped within each size pattern piece.  To do this, Erica sent digital patterns to Jasper and had her scale the artwork to the bodices of each size.  Those digital files then went to the print studio and underwent the same process as with the scatter printed pieces.

Of course, everything in this collection is not only printed but sewn right here in Portland. From start to finish, we're keeping it all local! If there's one way to truly embody Portland art in your wardrobe, it would be through these thoughtfully conceptualized pieces.

entertainmentbartenders x Jasper York. Set to release early February.

    Stay tuned!
